For the past seven years, I’ve gone to therapy to help with my mental health, stress, decision making, and productivity. There is a long history of mental illness in my family and so I am proactive as possible when I believe that I am struggling or not progressing as I should.
MENTAL HEALTH: MY PERSONAL JOURNEY
This week I made a video about my recent trip to therapy. I wanted to be honest about why I had gone back to therapy and how therapy can help people. I also wanted to dispel the myths about how expensive therapy is. It isn’t. I guess most importantly, I wanted to share my personal experience with you as well.
A major life moment happened to me a little more than a month ago. As great as it was, it has forced me to examine the authenticity of my life. I want to be transparent with what I’m going through and so I’m vlogging about it. As an author and filmmaker, I realize I have fans who look to me for guidance, advice and want to know how I’m navigating. Right now, I’m going through life and needing to have my therapist with me as I process all that is happening.
I understand the stigma attached with going to therapy, or not being able to cope on your own, or being ‘stressed out.’ But, I say, “It’s time for us to erase the stigma.” If you are having trouble with the stress in your life, I encourage you to go to a therapist. If you believe you are struggling with depression, I encourage you to go to a therapist. No one has a right to make you feel bad about getting help for yourself.
Your mental health is the foundation of who you are. Without mental health, you cannot make decisions, focus or progress in your life. If you’ve struggled with anything for a while and you know you haven’t been able to solve the problem on your own, be willing to help yourself by starting therapy.
I am going to continue doing videos about mental health as I will be vlogging my journey. I hope you will tune in. In the vlogging series, I will include topics about depression, medications, alternative therapies, etc. Too many of us suffer when we could be and should be getting help. I hope you are not one of these people. And, if you are, I hope you will fight for your mental health and get the help you need today.
Peace & Love,
