I’ve been thoroughly impressed with Chris Rock lately. His candor in interviews has been inspiring and gut wrenching at the same time. He’s a celebrity who seems authentic and authenticity is rare in Hollywood these days. He’s written and directed a new film entitled, Top Five. And, I plan to see it this weekend. Today, actually. Getting movies made is no easy feat so I encourage everyone to go support Chris Rock’s latest effort. He’s worked long and hard so let’s see what he’s been cooking in the kitchen.
The Washington Post wrote a favorable review of the movie. Everyone is a critic and though critics have a job to do, I encourage people to go see theater and art for themselves. Tastes vary greatly. Chris Rock has always been among my favorite comedians. I’ve always appreciated his wit and his topics. Not every comedian can hit my funny bone, so I’m support Chris on that note, alone.
This is the official blurb about the movie:
Though he began in stand-up comedy, Andre Allen (Chris Rock) hit the big-time as the star of a trilogy of action-comedies about a talking bear. Andre is forced to spend the day with Chelsea (Rosario Dawson) a profile writer for the New York Times, whose film critic has just panned Andre’s passion project about the Haitian Revolution. Unexpectedly, Andre opens up to Chelsea, and as they wind their way across New York, Andre tries to get back in touch with his comedic roots.
Below is the trailer to Top Five starring Chris and Rosario Dawson and a host of other people.
As a final note, I’d like to say that if you want to continue to see people of color on the movie screen, go see the movies!! Don’t make excuses. Don’t buy bootlegs. Go see these movies.
Update: I went to see the movie on Friday morning and it was excellent. It had purpose, feel good touches–everything you want in a good movie. I also felt this movie played to Chris Rock’s strengths. He came off as a natural as the character and I really loved it. Good job, Chris!!!
Peace & Love….
