Privacy is the sequel to Exclusive: A Novel inspired by my real life experiences being an entertainment journalist. On trial for the attempted murder of the conniving woman who tried to ruin her life, journalist Tisha Ariel Nikkole focuses on retaining her freedom and her sanity. Keyshawn “Shout” Lane, the biggest rapper in history is determined to keep Tisha in his life while a rival rapper tries to take him out of the game by any means necessary.
Questions with me about Exclusive & Privacy:
How much of PRIVACY and EXCLUSIVE really happened?
A lot of it. One of the scenes in EXCLUSIVE in which Shout is having his way with two strippers really happened while I was attending a music industry convention and negotiating advertising. Yes, I was negotiating advertising in a room full of working strippers. I was the only girl in the room who wasn’t on her knees, on her back or bending over.
Can you tell our readers about your most recent book, PRIVACY?
PRIVACY is the continuation of the character’s stories from EXCLUSIVE. One of the characters (I won’t tell you in case you haven’t read EXCLUSIVE) is trying to recover from a near fatal accident, and Shout, the main character, is having rival rappers threaten his position in the music business. You learn more about Shout’s family and Boom’s family in PRIVACY. Neither one of them will win any awards from Bill Cosby.
Why did you want to write books about your experiences in the music industry?
I was so sick of television, movies, videos that depicted the industry in a glamorous way when people behind the scenes are really suffering. In EXCLUSIVE, Shout talks about how fans of Biggie were photographed at his funeral and how other celebrities who mourned Biggie and Pac were treated as if they couldn’t cry in the open. These are the stories that don’t make the headlines, but I wanted to paint the music industry how I experienced it and not how I wanted it to be or how it could be so BLINGED up.
What does your urban fiction have to do with your teen books that you write?
I’ve had the experience of living a very exciting life. My life is the inspiration for all of my books. My first book is The Blueprint for My Girls: How to Build A Life Full of Courage, Determination & Self-Love. This book came from my diaries from when I was like 11 years old. I used to write down everything that ever happened to me. And, a lot of stuff would happen to me. So, when I started touring colleges talking to students, they would ask me about the same things I had written about in my diaries. So, bam, there was book 1. But at the same time, when I go out and talk to teens, they always want to know about the music industry, so bam, there was EXCLUSIVE. To be honest, I had the experiences from EXCLUSIVE before I wrote The Blueprint series. If I hadn’t gone through the music industry and dealt with sexism, racism and all the dysfunction there, I wouldn’t have saw the need to really motivate young people and girls, in particular.
