Gilbert Arenas Pleads Guilty To Felony Weapons Charge

January 15, 2010 By: Yasmin Category: Celebrity, sports

articleInlineIn a press release that I just read from the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, 28 year old, Washington Wizards guard, Gilbert Arenas pleads guilty to felony charge of carrying a pistol without a license. According to the press release Arenas will be sentenced on March 6, 2010:

He will face up to five years of imprisonment. Pursuant to the plea agreement between Arenas and the government, the government agreed that it will limit its allocution at the low-end of the applicable guidelines, which is estimated to be between 6 and 24 months, with probation, a split-sentence, or incarceration permissible.

The press release goes on but basically Gilbert is looking at prison time for bringing firearms into the Verizon center, displaying them to a teammate and then mutual threats being exchanged between Arenas and a fellow teammate.

What can I say? I liked Gilbert. This stupidity is beneath him, in fact, its so sub-zero…. Leave your comments.

After this picture appeared on the front page of the Sports Section in the Washington Post as well as the front page of ESPN.com, Gilbert Arenas was suspended indefinitely by the NBA. The photo of Gilbert shows him appearing to shoot at his teammates though he IS ironically under investigation for brandishing a firearm at a teammate… (SMH, SMH, SMH)

I would get on my soapbox right about now and say how STUPID it was for Gilbert to show such a blatant disregard for the seriousness of his current situation, but I won’t. I won’t say how disappointed Wizard’s fans have been in his performance (or lack thereof) for the past couple of  years and this latest drama is sure to get him a one way ticket out of Washington. I won’t say how he’s living up to the sum of his number “0,” because it would be too trite to say that he’s acting like a total zero right now. I won’t say those things.

But I will say:

Mercy is rarely ever shown to the African American athlete who does something stupid. Gilbert, welcome to that club. You’re bout to see the world in an entirely different light.

Got comments? Leave ‘em.

I believe Gilbert is on Twitter as gilbertarenas. Since he’ll be at home for a while, send him a text message and tell him how stupid and costly his errors in judgment have been. You never know, it might make a difference. He needs help!
