Welcome to this episode of Live Better with your Host Yasmin Shiraz. This is my first episode back since my trip to London. Oh, I love London. I was there during Wimbledon. Serena Williams, best female athlete in the world just won her 6th Wimbledon title. Awesome. I traveled to the London premiere of my film, Growing Up Positive which is a documentary about two young women who were born with HIV/AIDS. Live Better episodes are always inspired by what I’ve been experiencing, reading or something that has hit my desk. I traveled to London by myself to support my film and I learned so much about myself and those things I’d like to include in this episode of Live Better. So, of course, I have three questions for you.
If someone were to ask you, “What makes you happy, what would you say?” Would you be able to answer?
Is there anything you want to try and could but you’ve decided that you shouldn’t or won’t?
Do you know how to enjoy yourself, by yourself? Yes or No. This seems like a pretty simple question, but I don’t think its as simple as it seems.
The title of this podcast is: The Secret to Getting Rid of Anger.
Some days I can be downright angry about stuff and about life. But, I’ve noticed I’m not as angry as I used to be. In fact, I’m rarely angry at all. But, I know angry people. I know people who are pissed off most of the time. Why you mad? Why you angry? Why you walking around with the stink face? Outside of some physical issues that can bring about a fair amount of anger, folks are angry because they are not doing anything that makes them happy. What makes you happy? Going to the movies. Listening to a good record. Dancing. But, you know what I found out about myself in London? I like riding bikes in foreign countries to sort of explore. I’ve traveled to many countries, but I’ve never rented a bike and just explored for exploring sake but I did that in London. I had the cheesiest grin. Oh my goodness. I was happy on the inside. When is the last time you did something that just made you happy.
Not your partner, not your kids, not your parents. YOU. JUST YOU.
When I asked the question at the top of this podcast, “What makes you happy?” I know some of you listeners out there couldn’t think of anything. And, I’m not mad at you but what is happening is that we’ve begun to tie our happiness to everyone else’s in our family that we forget what makes us happy. I’m asking you today to think for 10 minutes about what would make you happy. And, it doesn’t have to be an extravagant thing. It can be something like watching a good movie. This week I’ve been obsessed with Stevie Wonder songs. Good music makes me happy. Why is this important? This is important because none of us should be walking around with the stink face. None of us should have a permanently pissed off expression. How can we avoid that? We must allow ourselves to be happy. That is the key to getting rid of anger.
Going to London was one of my best business trips because I allowed myself to do things that made me happy. I ate at the same restaurant 3 nights in a row because I enjoyed the food and it made ME happy. At the end of the trip, I developed a touch of hay fever and I didn’t feel great. But, you know what, it’ll always rank as one of the best trips ever because I made myself happy. Every single day I got up and day something that made me happy. I was literally walking around with butterfies in my stomach.
So for you, my colleagues, friends, fans, listeners, I know some of you are angry about stuff. I am too. But, we can’t allow anger to be our only emotion.
Allow some happiness in your life.
I bet there is someone out there who likes pork rinds but won’t eat them because of someone else’s comment. If that’s you, I’m telling you to eat your pork rinds today. I bet there is someone out there who wants to go home and turn their music up on full blast and dance until you feel like passing out but you’re worried about annoying the neighbors. I’m saying, dance, turn up the music, find your joy. Deal with the neighbors later
In everyone’s life a little joy should fall.
Find your happiness.
Let go of anger. And, email me. Tell me something that makes you happy. Thanks for listening to Live Better with your host Yasmin Shiraz. I hope this episode helps someone.
